Topology and Contour Mapping for the Missouri River

Our team played a key role in preparing and validating topological data for the Missouri River project using ArcGIS. This process involved building a detailed and accurate topology dataset within a geodatabase, essential for ensuring data integrity in complex hydrographic mapping.
The mapping work included:

  • Defining parcel boundaries and building footprints with precision.  
  • Integrating and editing contour lines to reflect accurate elevations and ensure topological correctness across the riverbanks, including attention to mud flats, islands, and retaining walls. 
  • Applying ESRI’s topology rules such as Must Not Overlap, Must Be Single Part, Must Not Have Gaps, and more to catch and resolve spatial errors like dangles, intersections, and pseudo nodes.  

We used advanced tools and methods such as:

  • Fugro Hydro Tools for elevation inspection. 
  • Error Inspector and Topology Edit Tool for identifying and correcting errors. 
  • Snapping and Planarizing vertices to ensure clean and connected line work, especially across river segments.  

Special attention was given to:

  • Cleaning up LIDAR-derived contours, particularly around bridges and hydro features. 
  • Adjusting contour elevations to maintain consistency, especially when banks showed minimal elevation differences. 
  • Ensuring all features were correctly snapped and aligned before delivering the final dataset.  

Before final delivery, all topological errors were resolved or marked as exceptions where appropriate, and the topology dataset was either removed or cleaned, based on the client’s requirements.This meticulous process ensures high-quality geospatial data that supports planning, environmental assessments, and engineering designs along the Missouri River corridor.
