As a volunteer geospatial analyst with the American Red Cross's MapSwipe initiative, I contributed to enhancing humanitarian response efforts by analyzing satellite imagery to identify and classify buildings and infrastructure in under-mapped regions. Utilizing the MapSwipe mobile application, I participated in a crowdsourced process to pinpoint areas of human settlement, enabling more accurate and efficient mapping by organizations involved in disaster response and disease control. This work supported the Missing Maps project, a collaborative effort aimed at improving geographic data for vulnerable communities worldwide. By marking locations of interest, my contributions aided in directing resources and planning interventions in areas lacking detailed maps, thereby facilitating timely and effective humanitarian assistance.
Validating Building Coverage from Aerial Imagery
As a volunteer geospatial analyst with MapSwipe, I contributed to a project focused on the validation of building footprint completeness using aerial imagery. My role involved reviewing high-resolution satellite images to verify whether polygonal building outlines accurately covered all visible structures. This task was essential for ensuring the quality and completeness of building data used in humanitarian mapping, urban planning, and crisis response efforts in under-mapped regions. By confirming or flagging discrepancies in polygon coverage, I supported the creation of more reliable and actionable geospatial datasets.
Street-Level Imagery Mapping
As a volunteer with MapSwipe, I participated in a street-level imagery project aimed at enhancing urban mapping efforts. Utilizing the MapSwipe web platform, I reviewed ground-level images to identify and classify specific features such as road conditions, signage, and infrastructure elements. This project supports urban planning, disaster response, and environmental monitoring by providing detailed geospatial data collected through crowdsourced efforts. The initiative leverages contributions from volunteers worldwide to improve the accuracy and comprehensiveness of maps, facilitating targeted actions by local authorities and organizations.
